Biography:
My name is Juanita Smith Payne and I am the granddaughter of a Windhorst. My gg grandfather, Dietrick Windhorst, (1820-1846) was born in Hanover, Germany, and immigrated to the USA in about 1844. He moved to Milan, Indiana and married Mary Voss (1825-1892) about 1845.

They had one child, Jonathan Windhorst (1846-1912), my g grandfather. Jonathan served in the Union Army during the American Civil War from 1863 to 1865. He was a prisoner at the Alabama Cahaba Prison from 9/1864 to 3/1865. On his way back to Indiana, he was on the steamship, Sultana, which exploded north of Vicksburg, Mississippi. Over 1700 people died in the marine disaster. Jonathan survived.

In 1868 in Milan, Indiana, Jonathan married Anna Margaretha Hoeft. They had five children, Henry A. (1869-1950), Mary A. (1871-1944), Sophia Magdelena (1874-1940), my grandmother, John William (1875-1943), John Phillip (1877-1943). The children were all born in Milan, Indiana. Sometime in the 1880’s, the parents and their sons moved to Washington, Kansas. Jonathan, Henry A., and John Phillip were farmers. John William was a carpenter. The parents and their sons died in Washington, Kansas.

The daughters, Mary and Sophia Magdelena stayed in Indiana and lived within a mile of each other. Sophia Magdelena, my grandmother, married Herman H. Smith, whose parents were born in Hanover, Germany, in 1901. They had five children, Martha (1901-1956), Walter Herman (1907-1958), my father, Monroe Freeman (1908-1974), Margaret Ellen (1911-1985) and Florence Agnes (1914-1954). The children were all born in Osgood, Indiana.

My father, Walter Herman Smith, married Crystal Ardrey Ray (1910) in 1931 in Napoleon, Indiana. They moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, when I was six years old. I, Juanita Smith Payne, was born in 1937 in Batesville, Indiana. I married Daniel J. Payne in 1957 in Chicago, Illinois and we have three children, Tracy, Daniel and Jason (1970-2004). Daniel has two children, Ariel and Zachary. They live in Canada. Tracy lives in Plainfield, Indiana.
